You can forget dad jokes. Audiences on the Gold Coast have diverse expectations when it comes to comedy, says Thompson. “This reflects the broad spectrum of residents and visitors in the area. However, based on the success of recent performances at Soundlounge, it's evident that there is a strong demand for comedians who can deliver a mix of clever observational humour, cultural commentary, and relatable anecdotes. Additionally, comedians who cater to younger demographics, like Will Gibb [who is appearing shortly at Soundlounge], appear to be selling well, suggesting a growing interest among younger audiences in the region.”
Joshua Addison Armstrong, who runs Based Comedy and the Gold Coast Laughs Festival, alongside the Comedy Underground in the Basement at Home of The Arts (HOTA) agrees that the comedy scene on the Gold Coast is going from strength to strength. “We attract a pretty varied bunch of comedians from all levels, both nationally and internationally,” he says. For Joshua, there’s no specific type of comedic demand on the coast, instead he “books people we think are funny and try to have a diverse range of voices. Every audience has a different familiarity with comedy and comedy education.”
When Josh began running comedy shows ten years ago, he says that there was probably less exposure to a widespread genre of comedy on the Gold Coast. “People are more comedy-savvy today,” he says. “We offer a pretty eclectic range of comedian in the weekly shows in the HOTA basement, so there’s something for everyone.” Each artist has an audience and followingHeard any good jokes lately? According to researchers, what makes a gag funny is actually down to science: c=(m+nO)/p to be exact. This serious-looking formula multiplies the punchline’s hilarity level by considering the length of the joke buildup. Don’t get the gag? Thankfully, the comedy scene on the coast has cracked the formula for fun.
According to Marc Thompson, Marketing and Communications Manager at Currumbin RSL’s Soundlounge, which regularly hosts upcoming and well-known comedians, the comedy scene on the Gold Coast appears to be experiencing significant growth. “This growth can be attributed to a combination of factors, including increased interest in comedy entertainment among local residents and tourists, as well as the efforts of venues like Soundlounge to diversify their programming beyond live music gigs.” The venue, upstairs of the RSL on Currumbin Creek, offers the perfect location for laughs and views. The roster of comedians, including Tahir, Peter Helliar, Arj Barker, Peter Rowsthorne, Akmal, Dave Thornton, Mel Buttle and Brett Blake bring diverse styles and appeal to various demographics, contributing to the richness and variety of the comedy scene in the region.

WHERE TO FIND THE LAUGHS
Soundlounge
An RSL may seem an unlikely place to find cutting edge comedy, but the upstairs rooms have long played host to comedy legends (and some pretty serious musicians too). Book a table downstairs for a sunset dinner over the Currumbin Creek, then head up for a belly full of laughs. Best of all, you can catch the courtesy bus (if you live within the vicinity of the venue), so you can continue the laughs long into the night. Book as a group and enjoy a fun-filled night out.
Based Comedy
You can find Based Comedy’s showcased comedians almost every night of the week at venues around the Gold Coast. Their weekly shows at HOTA, Home of the Arts, on Saturday nights bring comedy to the Gold Coast's cultural precinct every week with showcases as well as solos from the most unique and hilarious voices in comedy.
Comedy Club at The Star
From observational humour to political satire and everything in between, Based Comedy brings you the best of the best in stand-up comedy. Hosted by local radio announcer Danny Lakey, you’ll be rolling in the aisles to his jokes, along with their every-changing line up of comedians.
Kings of Comedy
This laughter location at Dreamworld aim to showcase rising stars of comedy with support from professional comedians. Presented each week by Simon Hughes (the man behind KOC).
