If you could pick three coastal towns globally recognised for their epic surf breaks and for producing some of the world’s greatest surfers, immediately Kirra, Coolangatta and ‘Dbah’ would come to mind. But the waves are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to these three spectacular neighbours.
While the Southern Gold Coast / Northern NSW border towns are famed for playing host to one of the top world championship surf competitions - WSL World Championship Tour - and are home to some of the world’s most famous surfers such as Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and Dean “Dingo” Morrison, we went to discover what else makes these pretty towns ‘so hot right now’.
Situated on the borderline of QLD and NSW, the middle and most wellknown neighbour of the three, is Coolangatta – the ‘gateway to the Gold Coast’, thanks to one of Australia’s fastest growing airports which currently supports over 6.5 million travellers annually. With humble beginnings as a small emergency airport established in 1936, to now offering international flights – the Gold Coast Airport has transformed itself over the years and, after recently receiving a massive $500-million-dollar Southern Terminal expansion, travellers can now experience a line-up of luxury international brands and a multitude of retail, food and beverage outlets along with their choice of over 700 flights per week.
Next door is picturesque Kirra, famous for its 2.4 tonne rust red sea eagle sculpture that used to sit watch atop of Kirra hill colloquially known as ‘The Rusty Chook’. The statue monument installed in 1983 for its historical significance to the area, was established as a public artwork by local artist Craig Mesdon (1960-2015) and had seen and weathered all until 2021 when it was deemed unsafe structurally and needed to be removed. Happily, in 2023, a replica of the sculpture was commissioned and, in keeping with the original integrity of the late artist, is due to be installed late 2024.
And then there’s Duranbah Beach - known as D’bah to the locals - a small nook of a suburb that also sits directly on the QLD/NSW boarder at the entrance of the Tweed River. The 350m stretch of surf beach, received its name in 1919 after the SS Duranbah, a steel ship built in Glasgow, Scotland, ran aground on one of its usual trade routes in the Tweed Bar during the early morning of November 6. The name was changed briefly in the 1980s to Flagstaff Beach, due to confusion with nearby farming district Duranbah (situated 20kms south), however it never stuck. Ever popular for its large swell and powerful, high-quality surf break, D’bah has played host to the likes of the Quicksilver pro and many other surf and bodyboard competitions.
Over the years all three suburbs have undergone remarkable transformations, emerging as some of the most sought-after holiday destinations on the Gold Coast. With a plethora of new developments and a rejuvenated atmosphere, the Southern Gold Coast beckons visitors to explore its hidden treasures and experience a truly unforgettable getaway.
The most recent to receive a facelift is Kirra Beach, with luxurious accommodations on the rise, world class restaurants moving in and a stunning new shopping precinct in development. Nestled along her pristine shores, the Iconic Kirra Beach Resort - offering elegant stays with breathtaking ocean views - stands as a testament to the area's newfound allure. Alternatively, Kirra Beach Tourist Park provides a more laid-back experience, whilst still allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the area.
When it comes to dining, the region boasts an array of culinary delights. Kirra Beach House showcases the freshest local produce and tantalises tastebuds with its innovative menu, and just across the road, next door to the Kirra Surf Life Saving Club, Siblings have taken up residency. A visually stunning, light-filled, modern space with uninterrupted ocean views and mouth-watering cuisine, that perfectly encapsulates the fresh new mood of the Southern Gold Coast.
For a taste of the Mediterranean, Xenia on the Coolangatta beachfront strip transports guests to the shores of Greece, or head to Pipi’s – a spectacular dining spot atop Point Danger. Housed in the former Cafe D’bar space, this brand-new development from the renowned Gambaro Group, offers panoramic ocean views and a sophisticated restaurant design (emulating the interior of a pipi shell) to complement their innovative approach to Mediterranean cuisine.
If it’s a laid-back locals vibe you’re after, you can’t go past the Rainbow Bay Surf Club. Built right above the only beach facing north on the Gold Coast, it’s these iconic views of the coastline that truly captures the essence of the Southern Gold Coast. Or rent a stand-up e-bike from Kool Bikes & Hire for a fun scenic exploration. The two-kilometre stretch from Coolangatta to Point Danger provides sparkling beaches to stop for a swim and magical vistas to fill your Instagram stories.
For some entertainment out of the weather, the newly opened Cinebar offers a unique cinematic experience. Taking ‘dinner and a movie’ to new levels, here you can sit back, relax and enjoy the latest blockbusters while having your meal and drinks delivered to your seat. And if the kids need to unleash some energy, head downstairs to Time Zone for a world of arcade games and fun-filled activities.
On sundown the Southern Gold Coast comes alive with a vibrant nightlife scene. Whether you're in the mood for live music or dancing the night away, the Kirra Beach Hotel, Coolangatta Hotel, Twin Towns, and Moxy’s Rooftop Bar will get you grooving.
And the early birds don’t get overlooked either - we’ve been doubly blessed with a second offering by the Gambaro group with newly opened Awaken. Situated directly under Pipi’s, early risers can take in the view in spectacular form. An airy coastal vibe offering health-conscious breakfasts, an impressive bread display, fresh baked pastries as well as a morning fuel up of Merlo coffee. Haig St Cafe & Restaurant in Kirra is another hot spot for coffee lovers and açaí bowl enthusiasts.
Regardless of where you choose to stay, dine or play, the Southern Gold Coast is a destination that captivates the soul. Its exciting transformation has breathed new life into the region, making it a must-visit location for travellers seeking adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable experiences.
