Nature’s Glam Side

Written by Donna Rishton-Potter

Autumn is the perfect time to get away. As the weather cools there’s nothing like an escape in nature; waking to the sounds of birdsong and crisp evenings spent by a campfire under a blanket of stars. But, if you’re not up for roughing it or hauling everything and the kitchen sink along with you, we have just the solution…

What if getting back to nature didn’t have to mean sacrificing a few creature comforts and a good nights’ sleep? Think fresh linen and plump pillows on a comfy bed, a private ensuite and even air conditioning! This is the world of glamping (glamorous camping) and here’s a few of our faves to get you inspired.

Woodland Luxe

No need to choose between relaxation and adventure, a stay at Cedar Creek Lodges’ newest offering, Woodlands Glamping,  means you can have it all; indulgence included. Located amongst 114 hectares of Tamborine Mountain’s subtropical rainforest - part of the Scenic Rim and Gold Coast hinterland region - and set, overlooking the stunning Cedar Creek at Thunderbird Park, Woodlands Glamping is the perfect combination of natural surrounds, adventurous activities and rustic luxury for all the family – including the pooch. We are talking a king-sized bed, a private ensuite (with shower under the stars) and deck (with BBQ and, I’m sorry, but did someone say ‘jacuzzi’? Yes indeed!) The family tent even has a plunge pool – so after the kids are done with the TreeTop Challenge, Adventure Mini Golf and mining for Thundereggs, parents can relax on sun loungers and inhale a magnificent slice of nature.

The Magic of Nightfall

There’s a little piece of heaven on earth to be found by those who are looking for some remote indulgence with minimal impact on our natural surrounds. Experience crisp, fresh air, pure mountain stream water and homegrown food cooked and delivered to your tent at Nightfall - a sustainable and award-winning glamping retreat set in a gorge of breathtaking scenery within the secluded Lamington National Park.

Find yourself unwinding in a luxurious two-person tent that boasts a 360-degree fireplace, a pair of vintage tin bathtubs, rain-head shower, flushing toilet, plush lounge and a king-sized bed made with luxe organic bedding. This is understated luxury with all the elements of camping we know and love - mountain wilderness, crystal-clear tumbling creek waters and simple fresh food. For owner Steve Ross, a self-confessed minimalist, the bush is the true hero here, so maintaining a small footprint on the land is paramount. Roll up the canvas walls to be cocooned in a mesh room, where inside appears to blur with outside and becoming one with nature is as easy as looking out.

Private Tranquillity

If it’s a secluded romantic getaway you’re after, look no further than the luxury couples’ eco-retreat at Ketchup's Bank Glamping, Cannon Creek - in the heart of the spectacular Scenic Rim. Set on the edge of 100-acres of private eucalypt forest - and with only 6 guests hosted on the property and at any one time - the only signs of life you’ll encounter are the myriad of wildlife that are happy to roam, soar overhead and perch in the trees.

Enjoy private facilities positioned with spectacular views of Knapps Peak and the Border Ranges and watch the rolling mists settle over the valley from your hammock. Accommodation includes luxury linens, plush bath robes, internal ensuite and an alfresco kitchen; while hosts Anna and Alex add thoughtful personal touches like an indulgent breakfast hamper of locally sourced supplies, and even chopped firewood and damper ingredients for cooking on the campfire. This tranquil spot guarantees all the best bits of a camping experience, with nothing bad at all!

Retreat Away

King sized beds, kitchenettes and flatscreen TVs aren’t usually synonymous with the camping experience, but they are if you’re glamping at Tucker’s Retreat. Another Scenic Rim beauty offering couples space to unwind in a choice of two private eco-accommodations (children over 12 are welcome if you book both tents). Whether you’re up for a bushwalking or mountain bike adventure, a local winery tour or an afternoon exploring the charming village of Canungra, your day will be complete relaxing in your personal hydrotherapy spa under a vast, starry night sky.

Glamping but make it a Yurt

How about something a little different? We couldn’t resist adding this magical beauty. Inspired by the yurts of Mongolia, Gwongorella - meaning ‘Dancing Waters’ - is tucked away in the rainforest of Springbrook Mountain, atop Purling Brook Falls. Enjoy the private space which comes complete with its own dancing water soundtrack - that is, the creek that runs through the property and is free to swim in - while lookouts, walking tracks, cafes and the Natural Bridge glow worm cave are just a stone’s throw away to explore. You’ll be captivated by the stunning central skylight or there’s the option of leaving the roof open on a clear night which makes for a breathtaking stargazing experience. The dwelling is completely self-contained with private bathroom and kitchen, and has the added luxury of an internal fireplace and outdoor firepit for cosying up on those crisp autumnal nights. Homemade meals are available on request as are holistic remedial massages and kinesiology treatments for the ultimate R&R experience.
