and coffee is great too? Well, that’s a bit like winning the lottery.

Thanks to the bounty of pet friendly cafes across this region, every weekend feels like an excuse to celebrate.But, more than a lonely water bowl in the corner, a true pet friendly cafe is somewhere you and your pooch feel at ease, particularly if they’re a bit anxious or excitable. Think tables away from foot traffic, room for a biiig stretch, and perhaps a dog chew or two on the menu.
Rather than leave it to you to uncover these diamonds
on your own, these are some of our favourites.
POOCHES & PASTRIES – EMERALD LAKES
(CARRARA)
Though dogs are typically after-thoughts for cafes, Pooches & Pastries is a welcome exception, with furry visitors clearly in mind from the outset. The name is a dead giveaway, while the menu of puppuccinos and dog treats alongside human friendly meals and coffee, plus an onsite grooming salon, really drive
that message home.
BSKT CAFE – NOBBY BEACH
Taking your pup out for breakfast? You’ll be in fine company at BSKT, where dogs of all shapes and sizes can be seen peeking out between tables, wagging hello to passersby, or tucking into their very own ‘puppy board’: a puppuccino sprinkled with cookie crumble, with an organic bikkie on the side.
LOCAL – BURLEIGH HEADS
All very good dogs are welcome at this Burleigh bar and cafe–open Wednesday to Sunday for pub classics, wines and cocktails. While there’s technically nothing for your pooch on the menu (though who’s to know if a chip slips off the table…),
they’ll still enjoy the social vibe, with dogs allowed in both the beer garden and front terrace.
TUCKER – CASUARINA
Part fresh bread bakery, part cafe–Tucker is a hub for Casuarina locals. That includes the furry kind. From personal experience, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but the bacon butty, granola, and chorizo chilli scramble are must-tries.

NEXT DOOR ESPRESSO – TWEED HEADS
Brunching with staffies; sipping lattes with labradors. That’s living the dream, right there. At Next Door – boasting two locations in Burleigh and Tweed – this dream can be part of daily life, with a casual vibe elevated by American-style service and a simple menu of all the classics. Try the miso avocado!
THE FARM – BYRON BAY
True to its name, The Farm is a place to connect with nature. Poultry, pigs and cattle all call this expansive property home, alongside a trio of dining options: Three Blue Ducks restaurant, The Bread Social bakery and Baylato gelato. Naturally, dogs must be on leash at all times.
WOODS – BANGALOW
Sometimes the best finds are hidden in plain sight. That’s the case at Woods, tucked away from the main drag in Lumber Yard creative precinct on Station Street. Whether just for a quick coffee or settling in for a chinwag under the pergola, this leafy gem has all the makings of a new favourite. Don’t be surprised if
staff come to pat your dog.
CAFE BOKER – BALLINA
Middle Eastern flavours are on show at this Ballina hotspot, which has fast become the go-to for a devoted pack of pooches (and their owners). Seating is admittedly a little exposed on the footpath, but with flaky burekas filled with spinach and feta or spiced portobello mushrooms on your plate, not to mention the staff all lining up for pats, it's likely your dog won't even notice.
DARK HORSE ESPRESSO – LISMORE
Eclectic decor, generous portion sizes and a display cabinet overflowing with delicious pastries, cakes, salads and wraps make Dark Horse a cafe worth travelling for. Social dogs will be in their element in the outdoor dining area, while others may be happier at one of the tables lining Strand Arcade.

FOLK – BYRON BAY
Another notable nearby hangout is Folk – at the entrance of the pet-friendly Discovery Parks Byron Bay. Parking can be a bit scarce, but if you’re staying at the park or happen upon an empty space, it’s an ideal choice for nourishing smoothies, whole foods and coffee, with your best friend in tow, of course.
